Artist Statement
My photographs are a synthesis of my
personal feelings, vision and experiences.
The lines, tonalities and colors that my
subjects possess inspire me. The essence
of my work is to lift the human spirit. I
see the world much like Michelangelo saw
a block of marble. “In every block of
marble I see a statue as plain as though it
stood before me, shaped and perfect in
attitude and action. I have only to hew
away the rough walls that imprison the
lovely apparition to reveal it to the others
eyes as mine see it.”
My passion for creating my photographs runs deep to the core of who I am; it is
food for my soul. “If a day goes by without my doing something related to
photography, it’s as though I’ve neglected something essential to my existence,
as though I have forgotten to wake up”......... Richard Avedon
Bio
Scott was born in 1955 in northern Michigan. His interest in
photography began in 1973 when his father gave him a 1950’s
vintage Argus rangefinder camera. Not knowing it at the time,
but it would begin a life long journey with photography.
In 1980 Scott returned to Western Michigan University to finish
the degree he began in 1974. Scott changed his major to Art with
an emphasis on photography; in 1982 he was accepted into the
BFA program. While at WMU he studied under Professor Emeritus
Jack Carney. "Jack is an incredible photographer and much of
what I know today is because of his inspiration, instruction and
friendship."
After college Scott opened a commercial photography studio
specializing in architectural, product and photo journalistic
photography. Scotts work has been published in Architecture
Magazine, Business Digest, in catalogs and in commercial
advertising. His artwork has been exhibited in several galleries,
The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Greenstreet Arts, Western
Michigan University, Greenstreet Arts and other galleries in the
Midwest.
Today Scott concentrates solely on his passion for fine art
photography. His work ranges from documentary photography to
traditional landscapes. "I am from the old school of photography
and my work has been heavily influenced my masters such as
Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Minor White."
